Grief has enveloped communities in Jigawa State following the death of Nigerian Army officer Faruk Umar Usman, who was killed during counter-terrorism operations in Borno State.

The Dutse Emirate Development Association (DEDA) confirmed the officer’s death in a statement issued on Thursday and signed by its Public Relations Officer II, Muhammad Musbahu Basirka.

According to the association, the late Lieutenant Colonel, an indigene of Birnin Kudu, died while leading operations against insurgent groups terrorising communities in the North-East.

DEDA said the officer paid the supreme price while defending the nation against fighters linked to Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province.

“The gallant officer paid the supreme price while defending the nation against terrorists in Borno State. His death is a painful loss not only to his family and the Nigerian Armed Forces but also to the people of Jigawa State, Dutse Emirate and the nation at large,” the statement said.

The association described the fallen soldier as a highly respected officer known for courage, discipline and compassion toward both troops and civilians.

It noted that communities across the North-East often commended his leadership and commitment in defending them against persistent insurgent attacks.

“For many residents who lived under the constant threat of insurgency, he was more than a military commander; he was a symbol of hope and security,” DEDA stated.

The group also highlighted the officer’s humanitarian efforts, saying he frequently used his personal resources to assist displaced civilians and support colleagues in difficult situations.

According to the association, his humility and selfless service earned him admiration from soldiers and civilians alike throughout his career.

DEDA further noted that his death during the holy month of Ramadan underscored the depth of his sacrifice while serving the nation.

The association extended condolences to the officer’s family, the Nigerian Armed Forces, and the government and people of Jigawa State led by Umar Namadi.

It also sympathised with residents of Birnin Kudu and members of the Muslim community over the loss.

DEDA urged the Jigawa State Government to honour and immortalise the fallen officer in recognition of his service and sacrifice to the country.
