Two soldiers, including an intelligence officer, have been killed following a violent clash with youths in a disputed area between Isabang and Alesi communities in Obubra Local Government Area.
Security sources said the incident occurred after troops from the Nigerian Army were deployed to the area to rescue a miner who had allegedly been assaulted by local youths.
According to reports, the crisis began on March 11 when a 25-year-old miner, Ibrahim Musa, who trades in tin ore at Ekuri village, was reportedly beaten at a village checkpoint and had his minerals seized by a group of youths.
The victim was said to have reported the incident to soldiers stationed at the 245 Battalion located at Edor Barracks near a medical facility in Ochon.
Following the complaint, troops reportedly moved into the forest to arrest four youths suspected to be involved in the assault.
However, residents said other youths mobilised and blocked the access road leading to the community in an attempt to prevent the arrests.
The situation reportedly escalated into a confrontation during which the youths attacked the soldiers.
In the course of the clash, troops opened fire, leaving at least four civilians injured.
The injured were identified as Christopher Agara, 27, and Ogobi Egbe, 30, while two others were reportedly taken away by locals for traditional treatment.
During the violence, two soldiers were fatally attacked by the mob, including an intelligence officer attached to the operation.
Security sources said the deaths triggered an immediate reinforcement of troops in the area.
The Nigerian Army has since deployed additional personnel to the affected communities to restore order and prevent further violence.
Local authorities said calm has gradually returned to the area as security operatives continue to monitor the situation.
