The Nigeria Police Force in Edo State has commenced an investigation into a viral video showing a disturbing case of bullying involving a student of Igbinedion Secondary School.

The directive was issued by the Commissioner of Police in the state, Monday Agbonika, who ordered the Divisional Police Officer in charge of the area to immediately visit the school and carry out a detailed inquiry into the incident.

The Edo State Police Command confirmed in a statement on Sunday that it had become aware of the video circulating widely on social media, which captured the bullying of a schoolboy by fellow students within the school premises.

According to the Command’s spokesperson, Eno Ikoedem, the police are treating the matter with utmost seriousness and have already begun steps to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

School authorities were said to have informed the police that the students allegedly involved in the act had already been expelled as part of disciplinary measures taken by the institution.

However, the police maintained that despite the internal sanctions imposed by the school, a comprehensive investigation would still be carried out to ensure accountability and determine whether further legal action is required.

The Command stressed that anyone found culpable in the bullying incident would be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law, taking into consideration their respective ages and relevant legal provisions.

The police further condemned acts of bullying, violence, or intimidation among students, describing such behaviour as unacceptable in any learning environment.

It also urged members of the public to remain calm and cooperate with law enforcement authorities by providing credible information that could assist the ongoing investigation.

The Command assured residents that it remains committed to protecting students and maintaining law and order across the state.

Residents with useful information were encouraged to contact the police through the Command’s emergency control room numbers or its Public Complaints Bureau and Complaints Response Unit, which operate round the clock.
