Residents of Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, were thrown into panic on Monday evening following a series of loud explosions that reverberated across parts of the city.

The blasts, which occurred on March 16, 2026, were suspected to have been caused by Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) allegedly planted by terrorists believed to be members of Boko Haram.

According to a newspaper report, the explosions were recorded in several locations, including the gate of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), the Monday Market Roundabout and the Elkanemi area.

Witnesses said the first explosion was heard around 7 p.m., shortly after Muslim faithful broke their Ramadan fast, triggering fear and confusion among residents in nearby neighbourhoods.

As of the time of filing this report, it remained unclear whether the explosions resulted in casualties or damage to property.

The incident reportedly occurred only hours after suspected terrorists attacked a military facility in Ajilari, an outskirt of Maiduguri.

Sources said the attackers set parts of the military location ablaze and made away with a patrol vehicle during the assault.

However, troops were said to have mounted a swift response, repelling the attackers and killing some of the insurgents, while others reportedly fled the scene with gunshot wounds.

Security agencies are yet to issue an official statement on the explosions, while residents remain on edge as they await further details on the situation.
