The Nigeria Police Force in Borno State has confirmed that 23 persons were killed and 108 others injured following multiple bomb explosions in Maiduguri on Monday night.
According to the command’s spokesperson, ASP Nahum Daso, the coordinated attacks occurred around 7:24 p.m. and were allegedly carried out by suspected suicide bombers using improvised explosive devices (IEDs).
Daso disclosed that the explosions targeted three locations: the Maiduguri Central Market, popularly known as Monday Market, the gate of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, and the Post Office Flyover area.
He said a joint team comprising police tactical units, military personnel, and other security operatives was immediately deployed to the affected sites. The areas were swiftly secured and cordoned off, while the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit conducted sweep operations to rule out further threats.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Naziru Abdulmajid, visited the scenes for an on-the-spot assessment and commiserated with victims and their families.
Emergency responders, including the National Emergency Management Agency and the Borno State Emergency Management Agency, evacuated the injured to nearby medical facilities for treatment.
Police said normalcy has been restored in the affected areas, with heightened security across the metropolis to prevent further attacks. Residents were urged to remain calm, vigilant, and promptly report any suspicious activities to security agencies.
The command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property while intensifying efforts to maintain peace and security across the state.
