The Nigerian military has raised fresh concerns over an increased threat of suicide bombings by Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province in the North-East, calling on residents to remain vigilant as the Ramadan season draws to a close.

In a security advisory issued by the Headquarters of the Joint Task Force North-East, Operation Hadin Kai, the military warned that recent incidents—particularly multiple attacks recorded in Maiduguri—indicate heightened risks in the coming days.

The advisory, signed by the Media Information Officer of Operation Hadin Kai, Sani Uba, noted that recent explosions occurred around Monday Market, the Post Office, and the entrance of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, resulting in casualties.

According to the military, the attacks underscore the persistent intent of terrorist groups to target densely populated civilian areas in order to instil fear and gain propaganda advantage.

Uba explained that intelligence reports and past patterns show insurgents often escalate attacks during major religious periods, when public gatherings increase significantly.

He identified the 27th and 29th days of Ramadan as particularly vulnerable, citing heightened movement of people in mosques, markets, motor parks, and other crowded locations.

Residents across the North-East were therefore urged to maintain a high level of vigilance, especially in public places such as worship centres, hospitals, markets, shopping areas, and major road intersections.

Worshippers attending night prayers, including Taraweeh and Tahajjud, were advised to exercise caution and cooperate with security personnel carrying out screening and access control measures.

The military also outlined safety measures for the public, including staying alert to suspicious activities, reporting unattended items, avoiding overcrowded areas where possible, and complying with stop-and-search operations.

Parents and guardians were advised to monitor their children closely, particularly during evening hours, while community leaders, religious authorities, and transport unions were urged to support ongoing security efforts through awareness and timely reporting.

Meanwhile, security agencies have intensified surveillance, patrols, and protection of critical infrastructure across the region to prevent further attacks and ensure safe observance of the remaining days of Ramadan and the upcoming Eid celebrations.

The military emphasised that public cooperation remains crucial in counter-terrorism efforts, urging citizens to report suspicious activities promptly, stressing that collective vigilance is key to ensuring safety.
