An official of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Ogun State, Abass Olalekan, has been taken into police custody following the death of a female corps member, Victoria Ariyo. Ariyo, who was serving in Abeokuta South Local Government Area, reportedly died on Tuesday from complications linked to a terminated pregnancy. Her remains have since been buried at Kobape Cemetery along Kobape-Sagamu Road in Abeokuta.

Sources alleged that Olalekan, who serves as the Local Government Inspector (LGI), was involved in a relationship with the deceased, which led to the pregnancy. Police sources confirmed his arrest, stating that he is currently being held at the command headquarters in Eleweran as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding her death.

The incident comes barely a month after another corps member, Adeleye Mary, died under unclear circumstances in the same local government area. Mary, who was attached to Ogun State Television as her place of primary assignment, was reportedly found lifeless in her residence, with the cause of death yet to be determined. Police, however, said there is no link between the two cases.

Confirming the development, the Ogun State Police Command spokesperson, Oluseyi Babaseyi, said the matter has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for thorough investigation. He declined to comment on the arrest or alleged involvement of the NYSC official. Efforts to reach the NYSC spokesperson in the state, Emmanuel Igba, were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
