At least eight suspected bandits have been killed after an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) they allegedly planted to target security forces detonated along Lukope Road in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State.

Security sources said the incident occurred around 8:30 p.m. on March 20 along the Kurebe–Kushaka axis, a known route for armed groups operating within the forest belt.

The explosive device reportedly went off when members of the group, riding on motorcycles, accidentally triggered it while moving through the area.

The blast led to the immediate death of about eight of the bandits, while several others sustained injuries.

The affected group is believed to be loyal to notorious bandit leader Dogo Gide and was reportedly heading towards the Lukope area at the time of the incident.

Troops of Operation Fansan Yamma, Sector 1, swiftly responded to the scene and intensified patrols to prevent further security breaches.

The development has heightened tension among residents of Kushaka, Kurebe, Gbato and surrounding communities amid fears of possible reprisal attacks.

Security stakeholders have called for proactive measures to reassure residents and strengthen security presence, as monitoring and patrols continue across vulnerable routes.
