The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has inaugurated a strategic leadership retreat for senior officers of the Nigeria Police Force as part of ongoing efforts to deepen institutional reforms and improve service delivery.

The two-day Executive Leadership Retreat, which brings together Deputy Inspectors-General (DIGs) and Assistant Inspectors-General (AIGs), is being held in Abuja with support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in collaboration with the Police Reform Secretariat.

The retreat, taking place at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, is designed to strengthen leadership capacity at the highest levels of the Force and align policing strategies with global best practices.

In his opening remarks, Disu described the gathering as a critical component of his reform agenda, stressing that effective leadership must be driven by vision, accountability, and the ability to inspire public trust.

He noted that the true measure of success from the retreat would be reflected in improved operational efficiency, discipline, and strict adherence to human rights across police commands nationwide.

Also speaking, Professor Olu Ogunsakin, Head of the Police Reform Secretariat and Director-General of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, highlighted progress made under the Supporting Police Accountability and Transformation (SPAT) programme.

According to him, key reforms awaiting implementation include a comprehensive review of the national police recruit curriculum—the first overhaul since 1968—as well as the introduction of a modern, rights-based framework under the newly gazetted Nigeria Police Regulations 2025.

Ogunsakin said the reforms, supported by the UNDP and the German Federal Foreign Office, are aimed at repositioning the Force to meet contemporary policing demands.

The retreat will feature a series of technical sessions focusing on evidence-based budgeting, community policing strategies, and digital transformation, all geared towards enhancing transparency and operational effectiveness.

The Nigeria Police Force reaffirmed its commitment to building a more accountable and people-centred institution, while also expressing appreciation to the UNDP and other international partners for their continued support in strengthening Nigeria’s policing system.

The event is scheduled to run through March 25, 2026, as part of broader efforts to reposition the Force for improved public service.
