Several persons have been reportedly killed following a violent attack by suspected bandits in the Aso-Pada area of Mararaba on Wednesday morning.
The attackers stormed the Welder Junction area, located behind Aso Secondary School, unleashing violence that left residents dead, many injured and others displaced.
Eyewitnesses said the assailants, armed with cutlasses and other dangerous weapons, descended on the community in the early hours, attacking unsuspecting residents and creating widespread panic.
Although the exact number of casualties remains unclear, multiple sources confirmed that several lives were lost, while many victims sustained varying degrees of injuries.
Attack Coincides with APC Congress
The incident occurred as the All Progressives Congress (APC) held its North Central Zonal Congress in Lafia, hosted by Governor Abdullahi Sule.
The proximity of the attack to the high-profile political gathering has heightened security concerns across the state.
Amid the unfolding violence, security was significantly reinforced, with a heavy presence of operatives observed escorting APC governors and party leaders to the congress venue. Witnesses reported a convoy of more than 20 vehicles moving through the state capital under tight security.
Schools Disrupted, Residents Flee
The attack triggered chaos in nearby schools, as parents and guardians rushed to evacuate their children from affected areas.
Students were seen stranded and distressed, with many in tears as they sought safety from the violence.
Residents described the situation as terrifying, with families fleeing their homes to escape the mayhem.
As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official statement from security agencies or community leaders regarding the incident, despite efforts to reach them for comment.
The attack underscores growing concerns over insecurity in parts of the North Central region, even as political activities continue across the country.
