Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang of Plateau State has called for a strategic shift to intelligence-led security operations following a deadly attack in Angwan Rukuba, Jos North Local Government Area, which left several people dead and many others injured.
The governor made the call on Monday while receiving the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Operations, Umar Shehu Nadada, who visited Government House on the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Tilwan Disu.
Expressing deep sorrow over the incident, Mutfwang described the attack as senseless and cowardly, noting that innocent residents, including women, were targeted. He disclosed that victims are currently receiving treatment at the Jos University Teaching Hospital, with many reported to be in stable condition.
The governor warned that the state is witnessing an emerging wave of urban terrorism, stressing the need to move away from reactive security responses to proactive, intelligence-driven strategies. He revealed that security agencies had already made progress, including the arrest of a suspect linked to the spread of inciting information capable of triggering unrest.
Mutfwang charged security agencies to intensify intelligence gathering and ensure that all perpetrators and sponsors of the attack are identified and brought to justice. He also commended residents and youths in the affected community for maintaining restraint in the aftermath of the violence.
Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to security, the governor called for stronger collaboration between government, security agencies, and local communities, stressing that criminal elements must be decisively confronted.
“The time for hesitation is over. We must deploy every available resource to defend our people and protect lives and property,” he said, assuring continued logistical and operational support for security agencies.
Earlier, DIG Nadada said his visit was part of a fact-finding and operational assessment mission. He disclosed that additional personnel, including units of the Police Mobile Force and intelligence operatives, had been deployed to restore order and track down those responsible.
He added that security agencies are working in close coordination to ensure the swift restoration of peace and prevent a recurrence, with plans to engage community leaders and assess the scene of the attack as part of broader intervention efforts.
