Operatives of the Rivers State Police Command have foiled a kidnapping attempt in Port Harcourt, recovering two AK-47 rifles, ammunition, and arresting one suspect, while six others fled into a nearby river during a raid.

The operation, carried out as part of ongoing security efforts, aligns with directives from the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, to strengthen internal security and combat violent crimes nationwide.

Spokesperson of the command, Grace Iringe-Koko, disclosed in a statement that the incident occurred in the early hours of March 20, following a distress call from a resident, Fadi Nasser, who reported that armed men had invaded his residence along Orogbum Crescent, Woji Road in the Government Reserved Area of Port Harcourt.

According to the police, the assailants attempted to abduct the victim and fired gunshots during the attack. However, the victim managed to escape, prompting a swift response from security operatives.

Investigations gained traction after a mobile phone suspected to belong to one of the attackers was recovered at the scene. Acting on this lead, operatives of the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) unit in Aluu deployed technical intelligence, which led to the arrest of one Joseph Abibo, identified as a member of the gang.

During interrogation, the suspect reportedly provided information that guided operatives to the group’s hideout. On arrival, the police team came under heavy gunfire from other gang members, resulting in a fierce exchange.

The operatives eventually overpowered the suspects, but about six members of the gang escaped into a nearby river, reportedly with gunshot wounds.

A subsequent search of the hideout led to the recovery of two AK-47 rifles, four magazines, and 108 rounds of live ammunition believed to have been used in the gang’s operations.

The police said a manhunt is ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects and recover additional weapons, adding that the operation underscores its intensified crackdown on kidnapping syndicates in the state.

Residents have been urged to remain vigilant and support security agencies with credible information, as the command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property while investigations continue.
