The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors has announced plans to embark on a total and indefinite nationwide strike beginning at 12:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 7, 2026.

The association said the decision followed what it described as the Federal Government’s move to halt the implementation of the Professional Allowance Table (PAT), a key component of agreements reached after the 2025 industrial action.

NARD noted that the revised allowance structure, which covers call duty, shift, non-clinical, and rural posting allowances, was initially scheduled for implementation in January 2026.

Although the process reportedly commenced in February, the association alleged that authorities now intend to discontinue it in April, prompting fresh concerns among its members.

In a statement issued after its virtual Extraordinary National Executive Council meeting held on April 4, 2026, the association expressed disappointment over the development, describing it as both avoidable and regrettable.

The statement, signed by the Secretary-General, Dr Shuaibu Ibrahim, urged the government to immediately reverse the decision to suspend the PAT implementation.

Beyond the allowance dispute, the association also demanded the payment of outstanding promotion arrears and salary shortfalls in affected health institutions across the country.

It further called for the swift conclusion of processes relating to the 2026 Medical Residency Training Fund (MRTF), which supports the training of resident doctors.

NARD also insisted on the immediate settlement of 19 months’ outstanding arrears tied to the Professional Allowance.

The association urged its members nationwide to remain united and resolute, reaffirming its commitment to pursuing its demands until they are fully addressed.

The planned strike is expected to disrupt healthcare services across public hospitals if no last-minute resolution is reached between the parties involved.
