The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has directed its Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) across the country to suspend all activities related to the proposed nationwide voter revalidation exercise.
The commission had earlier slated the exercise to begin on April 13, 2026, as part of preparations to update the voter register ahead of the 2027 general elections. However, in a fresh directive, INEC instructed that all publicity and logistical arrangements be put on hold pending further guidance.
In an earlier communication signed by the Commission’s Secretary, Rose Oriaran-Anthony, RECs were asked to commence preparations for the exercise, including mobilising personnel and deploying INEC Voter Enrolment Devices (IVEDs).
The initial timetable indicated that the exercise would be conducted in phases, beginning at the local government level from April 13 to May 2, followed by the Registration Area level from May 5 to May 11, and concluding at polling units from May 13 to May 19.
Alongside the suspension, INEC also announced a change in the format of its scheduled meeting with RECs. The meeting, earlier fixed for Thursday, April 9, 2026, in Abuja, will now be held virtually.
According to the commission, the session will take place via Zoom, with RECs advised to remain in their respective states and await further details for participation.
INEC expressed regret over any inconvenience caused by the sudden change in plans, assuring stakeholders of its continued commitment to ensuring a credible and seamless electoral process.
