The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has slammed eight electricity distribution companies (DisCos) with fines totaling over ₦628 million for overbilling unmetered customers in defiance of approved monthly energy caps.
The sanctioned DisCos include Abuja, Eko, Enugu, Ikeja, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, and Yola. The violations occurred between July and September 2024.
In addition to the fines, the companies are required to issue credit adjustments to all affected customers by May 15, 2025.
NERC reiterated its commitment to consumer protection and regulatory enforcement within the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI), warning that breaches of billing rules will not be tolerated.
