ormer Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has paid a heartfelt tribute to the late Pope Francis, describing him as a moral beacon who led the world with humility, truth, and a deep sense of service.
Obi shared his reflections in a statement posted on his verified Facebook page following his attendance at the solemn lying-in-state ceremony for the late Pontiff at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. The revered religious leader passed away on April 21, sparking a global wave of mourning and reflection.
“Pope Francis was more than a Pontiff; he was a moral light in a world darkened by inequality and indifference,” Obi wrote. “He lived for others, spoke for the voiceless, and reminded us all that leadership must be about lifting others, not self-exaltation.”
The former Anambra State Governor recalled his personal encounters with Pope Francis, noting that each meeting left a deep impression on him. He described the late Pope as a man who radiated peace and whose presence served as a powerful reminder of the sacred responsibility that comes with leadership.
Obi also revealed that he was once appointed to the Scholars Occultantes, an international circle of thinkers founded by Pope Francis during his time as Archbishop. The organization, he noted, helped deepen his appreciation for the Pope’s intellectual and moral philosophy.
As global dignitaries, including Nigeria’s Cardinal Francis Arinze, gathered to honour the late Pope, Obi called on African political, religious, and community leaders to draw inspiration from his life and legacy.
“Let this moment not just be one of mourning, but a call to lead with conscience, walk with the people, and govern with love,” he urged.
Obi concluded by praying for the soul of the departed Pontiff and expressed hope that his legacy will continue to guide those in positions of leadership across the world.
