The arrest of popular businessman and socialite, Emeka Okonkwo, popularly known as E-Money, by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has triggered a wave of criticism and renewed allegations of ethnic bias against Igbos in Nigeria’s enforcement system.
According to social media commentator and activist, VeryDarkBlackman, about 15 EFCC operatives stormed E-Money’s residence on Monday, allegedly over a viral video showing him spraying UK pounds on singer Flavour N’abania during Obi Cubana’s lavish 50th birthday party. The controversial twist? E-Money was reportedly stepping on naira notes while spraying the foreign currency — an action being cited as the basis for his arrest.
VeryDarkBlackman pointed out what he described as a glaring double standard, recalling a recent viral video showing the children of Lagos billionaire Razaq Akanni Okoya allegedly desecrating the naira in a public event. While the Nigeria Police reportedly summoned an officer seen in that video, there has been no word from the EFCC regarding the Okoya family.
\"Why is E-Money behind bars over a flimsy allegation, while the children of Okoya remain untouched despite being caught on video mutilating the naira?” he questioned. “I\'m beginning to believe the talk that there\'s a hidden agenda against the Igbos. This selective justice is loud and dangerous.”
The development has sparked heated debate online, with many Nigerians accusing the EFCC of disproportionately targeting individuals of Igbo origin while ignoring similar offences committed by others.
As of press time, the EFCC is yet to release an official statement on E-Money’s arrest or address the growing allegations of ethnic bias.
