The Federal Government has announced plans to establish a comprehensive support ecosystem aimed at improving the welfare, economic stability and social wellbeing of military wives and widows across the country.
The initiative, according to government officials, is designed to address the unique challenges faced by families of serving and fallen military personnel, particularly issues of economic hardship, access to healthcare, education, skills acquisition and psychosocial support.
Speaking on the programme, officials said the proposed ecosystem would bring together relevant ministries, security agencies, development partners and civil society organisations to create a coordinated framework of support. This, they explained, would ensure that military families are not left vulnerable, especially widows who often bear the burden of raising families after the loss of their spouses.
The Federal Government said the intervention would include empowerment programmes, vocational training, access to small business funding, counselling services and improved access to education for children of military personnel. Special attention, it added, would be given to widows of service members who died in active duty.
The move is part of broader efforts by the administration to strengthen morale within the Armed Forces and recognise the sacrifices made not only by soldiers, but also by their families. Officials noted that a well-supported military family structure is critical to national security and stability.
Stakeholders in the defence and veterans’ community have welcomed the plan, describing it as a long-overdue step toward institutionalising care for military families. They called for transparent implementation and sustained funding to ensure the initiative delivers lasting impact.
The government said further details, including timelines and implementing agencies, would be unveiled in the coming weeks as consultations with key stakeholders continue.
